Boston Globe columnist Mike Barnicle is forced to resign over plagiarism charges.

Barnicle ends his 25-year career at the newspaper after it was discovered he fabricated one column about children suffering from cancer and another in which he used a joke by George Carlin without attribution. Just two months earlier, on June 18, 1998, another Globe columnist. Patricia Smith, was forced to resign for fabricating numerous columns over a period of several years.
